America returns the favor given by the Marquis and the French Navy. We always help our friends ... and sometimes our enemies too we’re kooky like that.

Of course all Americans appreciate the assistance of the Marquis de Lafayette and his government, but it must be remembered that France helped the United States for more than just the support of Liberty. The fact that we were fighting the British gave France a certain impetus to stymie British aspirations in the New World. As it is famously said, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Regardless, France’s help in the American Revolution, particularly at Yorktown, cemented a bond of friendship that lasts to this day.

Oh absolutely but at that point we needed friends.
